Paul Durcan, goal keeper with the Donegal senior football team and All-Star goalkeeper for 2012 and 2014, took part in this year’s Great Ethiopian Run on Sunday, November 23rd in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. Paul is the new ambassador and fundraiser with Vincentian Lay Missionaries (VLM). The 10km run was through the streets of Addis Ababa with the added challenge of the 2,300m altitude. The event has been running since 2001 and now has up to 25,000 participants annually from all over the world.
“I am delighted to be able to help in some small way with the magnificent work that VLM are undertaking in Ethiopia” said Paul in an interview with the Donegal Democrat. Sponsorship is already coming from KN Group with Donagh Kelly of Donegal Town as its CEO, and further donations can be made on www.idonate.ie
While in Ethiopia, Paul visited some of the twenty six projects that VLM and its one hundred and fifty volunteers have been involved in since 2002, including the newly founded Ambo Lazarist Deaf Centre.
Paul was accompanied on this visit by Fr. Stephen Monaghan, chaplain to VLM and former national chaplain to the Deaf in Ireland, who is now closely associated with the first new school for the deaf in Ethiopia.
