SUMMER VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME
ETHIOPIA & GHANA

VLM began in 2002 by facilitating summer schools for the students of Atse, a Daughters of Charity primary school in a disadvantaged neighbourhood in Addis Ababa. Since then we have expanded to work at other locations in Ethiopia and Ghana every summer.

As the Ethiopian and Ghanaian academic terms are similar to Ireland’s, the children have an opportunity to dedicate four weeks of their holidays to extra education. Getting support with the English language is essential for these students as all state exams at secondary school level are through English.

The summer schools also present a new way of learning for many students and they particularly enjoy arts, crafts and music which are not part of the regular curriculum. Irish teachers generally work alongside local teachers at the summer school, also adding to their own professional learning.

Length of Placement: 4 weeks
Date Range: from early June to mid-August
Locations: volunteers work in teams of 2-6 at various urban and rural locations
Fundraising: €1990 for all volunteers working on the summer programme only.
Training: Pre-departure weekend (May 6th & 7th 2017) and Teacher Resource Training (May 13th, afternoon only).
