A big thank you to all of our volunteers – Kathleen, Vincent, Ciara, Margaret, Aoife, Ann, Michelle, Siobhán, Noreen, Maggie, Ann and Joe – who worked hard in Ethiopia throughout 2013. Our twelve 2013 volunteers worked on a variety of projects from summer schools to report and proposal writing to adult education to teacher training  and web development. We thank them for all of their efforts and wish them a pleasant Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

We especially wish Ann and Joe O’Riordan a Happy Christmas as they are still on placement and wish them well in the new year as they begin the final three months of their six-month placement in Ethiopia. Click here to read Ann and Joe’s story.

SCHOOLS

Between June and July 2013 St Paul’s College and Castleknock College sent fifteen students and six teachers to Ambo to run two summer programmes for the children of the local community. Facilitated by Fr Asfaw Feleke CM, the groups joined the lively community of Ambo, teaching songs and English to the Kindergarten and primary school children and practicing English with the older students from the community who attend the local secondary school. Of course, every afternoon was dedicated to sport, with huge competition between the Irish and the locals when it came to football. We thank the schools for their participation in this programme and wish next year’s groups well as they fundraise and prepare for Ambo 2014.

THANKS TO OUR HOSTS IN ETHIOPIA
Our achievements of the past year would not have been at all possible if it were not for our welcoming hosts. Many thanks to the Daughters of Charity in St. Mary’s, Addis Ababa, Bulbula, Woylita Soddo and Mekele as well as the Vincentian Fathers in Addis Ababa, Ambo and Mekele for working with our volunteers and allowing them a valuable experience of the Vincentian Mission in Ethiopia.
