Our placements are generally short term, from a minimum of one month to a maximum of three months. Volunteers can stay for longer but may need to may some visa adjustments.
All candidates should firstly submit an application form, and will then be interviewed by VLM personnel. As VLM is a signatory of the Comhlámh Code of Good Practice, we ask all candidates to submit a Garda vetting form and to declare that they are of sound physical, mental and emotional health.
If you wish to volunteer during summer 2014 on one of our summer programme teams you application should be submitted by March 31st at the latest. The dates for travel for the summer programmes are from mid-July to mid-August and are summer camps for children from Daughters of Charity and Vincentian schools at various locations around Ethiopia. Successful candidates are then required to raise or pay €3000 (return volunteers €2,500) to cover the cost of their placement.

Volunteers must also attend all pre-departure training sessions, which will be held on April 26th & 27th in 2014, at All Hallows College. Pre-departure training includes sessions on development education, poverty and inequality, health & well being, cultural awareness, classroom management, the Vincentian ethos and spirituality, as well as practical and personal preparation for the placement.
Volunteers always find this useful as it is a chance to meet others travelling and prepare together for the delivery of summer projects run by volunteers during these months in our partner schools.
A one-day debriefing will also be arranged for the following autumn and is recommended to all returning volunteers.
